Volunteer project: The volunteers will be involved in teaching, counseling, playing, cooking, physiotherapy activities and feeding kids in a Home for mentally handicapped children. They will also assist in the day-to-day co-ordination of the Home to ensure efficient operation.
Special requirements: Volunteers with physiotherapy and teaching skills are needed; preferably a physiotherapist, occupational or speech therapist, or a teacher (Math, English, Science, French, German, Italian language, Literature and grammar). However, we have an open policy and applicants with other ideas to share are also welcome to apply and will be considered. The minimum age of the volunteer should be 21 years.
Volunteers need to contribute/initiate ideas and by that would be promoting the growth of the School. This is an opportunity for the volunteers to work at a community/grassroot level in capacity building and training in self-sustainability.
Duration of the project: The program will run for a minimum of 1 month and a maximum of 6 months. The program is running throughout the year.
Orientation: All volunteers will first meet in Nairobi for orientation.
Location: Mombasa is located in the Coast province, about 8 hours drive from Nairobi (500 km). The Home is located in Bamburi, about 20 minutes drive from Mombasa town. Public transport is available. The closest hospital is 10 minutes drive. Markets, Post Office, Banks (ATMs), Internet and other facilities are located in Mombasa.
Salem Orphanage Home was founded in 1992. It is based in Kisumu which is the third largest city in Kenya. Kisumu has a population of approximately 300,000 and is located on Lake Victoria almost on the Ugandan border. In Kisumu, there are many orphans who, without help, would have no future. Salem Orphanage is a home to about 130 orphans who lost their parents (usually to AIDS) and street children from the slums. There are primarily boys, due to the "preference" for girls as household labor help, and the difficulty for boys to stay at home if their mother marries someone other than their father. At Salem they are loved and cared for well, but the need is still so great.
Volunteer work: Volunteers' major duties include: - Responsible for day-to-day coordination of the Home to ensure efficient performance of the organization operation - Cooking for the children, washing the children's clothes and counseling - Teaching the children sports, drama and theatre - Farming and making "jikos" (cooking pots) The volunteers will be working from Monday to Saturday. The number of hours will be decided by the Home management. Special requirements: The Orphanage requires volunteers with counseling and teaching skills; preferably teachers in Math, English or Science and teachers for early childhood education and nursery schooling. However, we have an open policy and applicants with other ideas to share are also welcome to apply and will be considered. Volunteers need to contribute/initiate ideas and by that would be promoting the growth of the Orphanage. This is an opportunity for the volunteers to work at a community/grassroot level in capacity building and training in self-sustainability. Guaymas city has been suffering in the last years unusual weather phenomena. This year the hurricane Jimena has lashed the city of Guaymas leaving an important level of rain. 2009 is the year when it rained the most (in the last 50 years) and this caused an important damage to the population of Guaymas and to the city. The hurricane affected people of all backgrounds, leaving a lot of people in the middle of nowhere since they lost everything they had. Everything was affected, public buildings, leisure areas, houses, schools, there was no place that was not affected. This international volunteer project is organized in order to help in the reconstruction of the city of Guaymas with the support of motivated volunteers. There are many things to be done since there were several areas seriously affected. We need help to clean beaches, to rebuild sportive spaces, to clean up parks and community spaces, to fix roads, to help in rural communities by giving health workshops. After the hurricane, the children affected don’t have a place to continue their studies, they lost everything they had for their education: material, furniture, the roof collapsed and the walls were damaged because of the water and humidity. For that reason, at this first stage, the goal of the project is renovating and reconstructing two schools damaged by the Jimena Hurricane, so the children affected can return to their educative activities as soon as possible and in a clean and healthy environment, appropriate for their development and with the support of the international volunteers. This project will benefit 25 families for the first school and 180 families for the second school. Volunteers will help with the reconstruction of the two schools affected. They will help with reconstruction activities such as painting walls, reforestation, and cleaning the schools. They will contribute to renovate these structures through scratching and painting walls, and will also do some artistic work such as painting murals on the walls of the schools with the help of local volunteers with landscapes and thematic appropriate for the children. The volunteers will also help planting trees and reforesting the affected area, making and putting signals and signs. Age range: 18 and over Location: Morelia is a beautiful historic city, and capital of the state of Michoacán. Founded almost 500 years ago, the city has a wonderful central zone with buildings dating back to the time of the Spanish conquest as well as all the more modern attributes (shops, bars, cafés, etc). The city's population is over 1 million and the climate is moderately warm, with daytime temperatures ranging from 20-35º C. Morelia is well connected to a variety of great places to visit, such as Pátzcuaro, and the ancient Purépecha capital Tzintzunzan.

The SOS Children's Village is situated in the centre of Viet Tri City, the capital of Phu Tho Province. There are now about 168 orphans living in 15 family houses under the care of the village mothers and staff.
The orphans come from 5 different provinces in the north of Vietnam. Volunteers will spend time with the children and help improving their English, organizing games and other activities for them. They will also help redecorating the houses and classrooms, planting vegetable, cleaning the area. International group of volunteers will also join the families to get closer to the children’s life and try to build up wider horizon for the children and encourage them to learn better for brighter future.
Mysore is a city in the state of Karnataka in Southern India. It was the erstwhile capital of the Wodeyar dynasty and is considered the cultural capital of the state. The city has recorded history dating back a thousand years and a mythical history which explains the origin of the name - apparently, this was the place where the demon Mahishasura was slain by the Goddess Chamundi. You will find a statue of the demon on Chamundi hill which commemorates this event.
In this project the volunteers will work with different organizations involved in the development of the underprivileged. The slum reality is a big issue in the entire country. The aim is to spread awareness among the people and to give them more instruments to feel confident and free to decide for their future, and for the future of a new generation. The mission of this project is to: • Organize a multi-purpose project to involve the community and sensitize the local people about the Health & Hygiene problems.
• Educate the children to build a better and more conscious society.
• Spread awareness on Women rights issues and social welfare;
• Environmental issues.
• Working with other NGOs in community service projects.

The series will explore various facets of hoarding through the personal stories of people who hoard and those who may live with a hoarder, along with insight from leading experts on this issue. If you, or a family member, are a hoarder we would welcome the opportunity to speak with you. Situations can involve one, or multiple hoarders in the same family; people attempting to cope with a hoarding issue; or in more extreme cases, people who may be facing financial or marital distress due to hoarding.
The goal of the series is to promote better understanding of why people hoard, what steps can be taken to deal with the issue, and how a comprehensive exploration of this common problem can lead to positive change for the people involved.

Volunteer project: Coorg or Kodagu (originally called Kodaimalenadu) means “dense forest on a steep hill”. It is a rural district located near the city of Mysore (Karnataka State) amongst a scenery of misty hills, lush forest, acres and acres of tea and coffee plantation, orange groves, undulating streets and breathtaking views. The international volunteer projects in Coorg will focus on environmental protection, re-forestation, tree planting, working with different local NGOs to spread health and hygiene awareness among the tribal villages. The project involves assisting in various underprivileged schools by teaching basic English and Mathematics, health and hygiene, and renovation work such as building playgrounds. The activities will vary and will involve some manual work.

The Pandan village is located in Rembang regency. The word “Pandan” itself means such kind of leaf which smells good and it can also be used to make a plaited mat.The village provides natural scenery and is far away from polution. This is a pilot project in an elementary school in Rembang regency intended to give some contributions to the educational program in the school and influence positively the develpment of the village, while promoting international solidarity and intercultural encounters. In this context, a team of international volunteers is invited to take part both in renovating the area and in educational activities.
The project will be in Pandan Elementary School with around 100 students and 10 local teachers. The volunteers will help in the renovation and painting of the local school. The educational activities with the children will involve mainly teaching English and basic hygiene practices like cleaning hands, cutting nails, etc.
Study theme: The volunteers will be introduced to the Indonesian culture and customs in general, with a special focus on the Javanese particularities.
Leisure time: During the free time, the volunteers may visit Goa Akbar (Big Cave) and Goa Maharani (Maharani Cave). Near these caves, there is a tourist site called Wisata Bahari Lamongan (the site lies along the beach and is completed with some interesting games, performances and a swimming pool).

Volunteer project: The Akhas are part of the Golden Triangle hill-tribe cultures. Like in the neighbouring countries where they also live, they face in Thailand strong difficulties to be recognised and to value their particularities. The AFECT organisation contributes since 1981 to the defense of their rights, youth empowerment, elders support and cultural preservation and study. The volunteers will learn about their culture and problematic situation and contribute to AFECT projects and the daily life of the Akha villages.
The main objective of the project is cultural exchange between the volunteers and the local villagers but the participants of the project will also practically work in the communities doing different kinds of support and development works, like renovation of some community spaces or field works and farming with the villagers. The exact nature of the work will depend on the needs of the village at the time of the project.
Study theme: The volunteers will learn about the AFECT campaigns and discover the Akha culture, lifestyle, particularities and problematic situation in Thailand from the inside and from Akha people themselves. An introduction to Akha and Thai language is foreseen.
Special requirements: No special profile is required. Nature lovers, ethnology fans and human rights activists will be particularly interested in this project. Adaptability is required from the participants. Age range: 18 and over Project language: English
Leisure time: The free time will be organised according to the weather and the actuality of the communities but in general it will be essentially spent in the community. The volunteers will have the chance to learn about Akha cuisine, massage and specific handicraft. They might have the opportunity to attend traditional Akha ceremonies and events (like the principal Harvest celebration in March). If the weather permits it, trekking in the hills can also be foreseen. New years Eve, according to the Thai Buddhist calendar takes place in April. The volunteers in the April group will have the great chance to attend the ceremonies and festivities in the village with the local population.
Accommodation: The volunteers will be hosted by the villagers in the communities where they will work. The conditions will be the same as for the Akhas themselves: very basic compared to urban Thailand, but very authentic. Do not expect occidental luxuries in any case. Location: The project will be held in the Chiang Rai region (North-west Thailand) and the surrounding mountains all the way to the Golden Triangle borders, maybe one of the most beautiful locations in Thailand! The influence of the hill tribes and nearby Burma, Laos and China shapes the culture here.

Kushalanagar is a town located in the east of Kodagu district, near the Kaveri river, in the state of Karnataka, India. The Bylakuppe settlement for Tibetan refugees is nearby in Mysore district. Bylakuppe is the location of "Lugsum Samdupling" (established in 1961) and "Dickyi Larsoe" (established in 1969), two adjacent Tibetan refugee settlements, in the west of Mysore district as well as a number of Tibetan Buddhist monasteries. The settlements were established on land leased by the state government to accommodate some of the Tibetan refugees who came to resettle in India after 1959. Bylakuppe consists of a number of agricultural settlements / small camps close to each other, and has a number of monasteries, nunneries and temples in all the major Tibetan Buddhist traditions. Most notable among them are the large educational monastic institution Sera, the smaller Tashilunpo monastery (both in the Gelukpa tradition) and Namdroling monastery (in the Nyingma tradition). The volunteers will have the opportunity to learn about the Tibetan culture and the different issues related to the exile of its people and the re-settlement in India. There will be cultural activities and exchange with the Tibetan Youth with the support of the Tibetan Welfare Office. The project will also include an awareness campaign for the protection of the environment and solid waste management in cooperation with the Tibetan Welfare Office. Furthermore, the volunteers will support a local Indian/Tibetan school in need of simple renovation work like painting, building playgrounds, etc.

Held in over 150 communities across the United States each year, the Out of the Darkness Community Walk is a 5K scenic walk that raises awareness of mental illness and suicide in the community. It also raises money for the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention (AFSP) to support vital research and education programs to prevent suicide and save lives, increase national awareness about depression and suicide, and assist survivors of suicide loss.
Registering is simple – you can register as an individual, join an existing team, or start your own team! There is no fee to register and participate in the WALK!

Learn about Tibetan culture, support a local school and hike in the Himalayas
Valleys of the Himalayas - where the heaven meets the earth. This small paradise is home to the Dalai Lama and to a significant Tibetan settlement in India. Dharamsala is set in the backdrop of the snow-clad peaks of Dhauladhar Mountains. It is the capital of the Tibetan Government in exile and the residence of the Dalai Lama. In the first two weeks of the project, the volunteers will get the opportunity to learn about the Tibetan culture and the different issues related to the exile of its people and the re-settlement in India. There will be cultural activities and exchange with the Tibetan Youth with the support of the Tibetan Welfare Office. The project will also include an awareness campaign for the protection of the environment and solid waste management in cooperation with the Forest Department. Furthermore, the volunteers will support a local school in need with simple renovation work and interaction with the children (Indian children).
Finally, on the third week of the project, the volunteers will take part in a 4 day trekking activity around the mountains of Dharamsala and Triund.

Location: Dharamsala, Himachal Pradesh, North India, 500 km north of Delhi.
Dharamsala is accessible by bus on a daily basis from New Delhi and other smaller cities of North India. The nearest train stations are Pathankot and Kangra Mandir. Delhi is the nearest international airport.

Cultural exchange and teaching English to students on Hainan Island

The project takes place in Wenchang, about 70 km away from the main city of Haikou on Hainan Island. Wenchang town consist of a closely related community with a rich culture.
During the project, the international participants will work together with other volunteers and local students of different ages. The main activities consist of:
- Developing friendship between the participants and the local students and teachers.
- Visiting schools around Wenchang town.
- Teaching English with the local English teachers.
- Learning Chinese and local language.
- Taking part in some sport games with the students.
Along with teaching the local students English, it is very important to let them meet friends from other parts of the world, thus giving them a chance to expand their horizons.
Special requirements: Interest in teaching and cultural work. We expect all the volunteers to be open minded, leave prejudice behind and show initiative. Creative ideas for the work, discussions, and the free time are expected to come from the group.
Ungaran Disable School is located in Ungaran Regency, Semarang. It is about 10 km south away from the city centre of Semarang. This School was founded with the aim to cater for the needs of disabled children and youth in Ungaran and the surrounding areas. Moreover, this school is also aimed to encourage and motivate the disable children and youth to struggle for their future. It is mainly funded by the Central Java department of health. We would like to host foreign volunteers because we believe that their interaction with the children, during education and vocational classes and other therapeutic activities will be of great benefit as our students have little or no chances to meet and live with people from other cultures. The intercultural dimension that their presence will generate will also be welcomed and valued by the local staffs. The support that the volunteers will give to our teaching staff, particularly those teaching English, will be invaluable. The role of the volunteers will be assisting local teacher in classes like teaching very basic conversation in English, helping teachers in giving training on physical activities of the disabled students like making simple handicrafts, playing, doing simple sport etc . Volunteers' influence on students is expected to create a sense of knowledge of other realities of the disabled kids and other cultures in a way that improves their own perception of themselves and what they can achieve. Also to open the mind of international volunteers that the disabled students also need attention to face their future. It will also give opportunity for the international volunteers about the treatment that should be done by the families of disabled children.
Study theme: The volunteers will be introduced to the education activities of the disabled students related with Indonesian culture and customs in general.
While I agree it's not right for people to decide they no longer WANT a pet, I would much rather see a family/person surrender their animal rather than leave them to fend for themselves which is something happening now in epidemic proportions.
I myself have sacrificed to keep my 3 cats during 2 years unemployment, some people just can't do it.
You really should omit the line giving your opinion of it being wrong to surrender an animal.
