In the early 2000’s I spent much time with my now departed soulmate at Scripps Medical Clinic in LaJolla. We stayed in Del Mar where I met a lady antique dealer with a shop there. We became friends not because I purchased some items from her but because we simply got along well. She invited me to go with her to an estate sale in Rancho Santa Fe, which was by invitation only, for the recently departed actor Victor Mature. There I saw and fell in love with the jockey bench. I assumed that it originated from the race track in Del Mar, which Victor frequented. But a relative of his informed me that Victor had it shipped from Kentucky, where he was brought up and had connections with horse racing. It is designed to accommodate a jockey getting prepared to race: set a bit low to address the jockeys’diminutive size and a folding door at middle of the seat providing ample room for stowage of gear. (I have utilized that secret compartment through the years to conceal items)! The cushion which I had made for it twenty plus years ago raises the seating height to accommodate normal folks. It is still functional but getting tired and should be recovered or duplicated. So………if you stayed with me so far, you probably envision where you could stage it and enjoy the marvelous history that accompanies it. (Sounding like Billy Crystal now (“You look marvelous!”) It is quite heavy but two guys can walk it away on a wheeled cart. I am posting it here on CL first in case an appreciative buyer sees it, but it will be on eBay later, where it will sell for certain in time. Call 702 496 234 two to arrange to see.
